　　TheU．S．DepartmentofLaborstatistics(统计)showthatthereisanoversupplyofcollegetrainedworkersandthatthisoversupplyisincreasing．Alreadytherehavebeenmorethanenoughteachersengineersphysicistsaerospaceexpertsandotherspecialists．Yetcollegesandgraduateschoolscontinueeveryyeartoturnouthighlytrainedpeopletocompeteforjobsthataren’tthere．Theresultisthatgraduatescannotentertheprofessionsforwhichtheyweretrainedandmusttaketemporaryjobswhichdonotrequireacollegedegree．

　　Ontheotherhandthereisagreatneedforskilledworkersofallsorts：carpenterselectriciansmechanicsplumbersTVrepairmen．Thesepeoplehavemoreworkthantheycandealwithandtheirannualincomesareoftenhigherthanthoseofcollegegraduates．Theoldgapthatwhite-collarworkersmakeabetterlivingthanbluecollarworkersnolongerholdstrue．Thelawofsupplyanddemandnowfavorstheskilledworkmen．

　　Thereasonforthissituationisthetraditionalmyththatcollegedegreeisapassporttoaprosperousfuture．AlargepartofAmericansocietymatchessuccessinlifeequallywithacollegedegree．Parentsbeginindoctrinating(灌输)theirchildrenwiththismythbeforetheyareoutofgradeschool．Highschoolteachersplaytheirpartbyactingasifhighschooleducationwereapreparationforcollegeratherthanforlife．Underthispressurethekidsfallinline．Whethertheywanttogotocollegeornotdoesn’tmatter．

　　Everybodyshouldgotocollegesoofcoursetheymustgo．Andeveryyearcollegeenrollments(入学)goupandupandmoreandmoregraduatesareovereducatedforthekindsofjobsavailabletothem．

　　Oneresultofthisemphasisonacollegeeducationisthatmanypeoplegotocollegewhodonotbelongthere．Ofthesixtypercentofhighschoolgraduateswhoentercollegehalfofthemdonotgraduatewiththeirclass．Manyofthemdropoutwithinthefirstyear．Somestruggleonfortwoorthreeyearsandthengiveup．
