　　The54-year-olddesignengineeriswell-knownforhisinventionofapowerfulvacuumcleanerthatoperateswithoutabag.Dysonspent15yearstryingtopersuadethebankstosupporthisideasandenablehimtosetupproductionofthenewvacuumcleaners.Now,aftersixyearsinbusiness,hisfactoryinasmalltowninthewestofEnglandproduces8,000vacuumcleanersaday.MovingthemainproductionfacilitytoMalaysiawillresultinalossof800jobs.BoththeUKgovernmentandtheunionshaveexpressedtheirhorroratthedecision.

　　Thecompany,whichemploys1,800peopleintotal,saidithaddecidedtomoveproductionbecauseofthesuccessofaplantitestablishedinMalaysiatwoyearsago.LaborscostsattheMalaysianplantareonly$1.50anhour:intheUKtheyare$4.10anhour.ButthequalityoftheMalaysiancleanersisashighastheBritish-madeones.

　　Anumberofothercompanieshavealsomovedproductiontolowercostcountriesinrecentmonths.ManypeoplefearforthefutureofBritishmanufacturingifthistrendcontinues.

　　Dysonbelievesthemovewillenablethecompanytocutproductioncostsby30percent.Heplanstoputthesavingsintoresearchanddevelopmentinadrivetocreatenewtechnologyproductsforthefuture.TheR&DdepartmentwillcontinuetobebasedinBritain.

　　Thecompanyachievedsalesof$220millionin2000andspendsaround10percentofturnoveronnewproductdevelopment.DysondescribedR&Dastheheartandsoulofthebusiness.HesaidthedecisiontocutbacktheUKworkforcewasasadanddifficultone.
