Doingwhatyouknowyouweremeanttodoinlifecanoftenbeaverydifficultthingtoachieve,andthereareararefewpeoplewiththecourageittakestofollowthatcall.That’sthemessagelyingattheheartofIcePrincess,thoughthemovietakesthelongroutegettingtoit.Thefilmgetsofftoarockystart,tracingabsurdlinesaroundthekindofplotonewouldexpectfromasillymade-for-Disney-Channelmovie.CaseyCarlyle(MichelleTrachtenberg)isajuniorinhighschoolandsomethingofasciencegenius.Throwninforgoodmeasureisthesimplejoyshetakesiniceskatingonthepondinherruralbackyard.HermotherJoan(JoasCusack),abitterlyfeministwoman,dreamsofthedaywhenherbrilliantdaughterwillriseaboveherhumblerootstostudyphysicsatHarvard.Sincetheprestigiousschooldoesn’tcomecheap,Caseyjumpsatthechanceforascholarshipbycompletingaspecialphysicsproject.Shemustfindaresearchsubjectthathasscientificmeritbut,ofcourse,isalsosomethingsheispassionateabout.Despitethatshakybeginning,thecinemazambonipaysIcePrincessalittlevisitlessthanhalfwaythrough,glossingoverthegapingplotholesandgivingtheactorssmoothicetosinktheirskatesinto.Theresultisastorythatmakesasmuchofacomebackasitstitlecharacter,revealingamoviewithalotofgenuineheartanddepth.I’dbelyingifIsaidthereweren’tmomentstowardstheendwhereIwantedtocheeroutloud.Withsomeadjustmenttothebeginningpartsofthefilm,IcePrincesscouldeasilyhavebecomethekindofG-ratedgoldthatDisneystruckwithTheRookie.Sadly,itsinitialweaknessesleaveitstandingsquarelyonthesilvermedalistplatform.
