刘胡兰，女，山西省文水县云周西村（现改名为刘胡兰村）人，1932年10月8日诞生在一个贫苦农民家庭。

　　出生时父母给她起名“刘富兰”，从名字上就可以看出一个挣扎在苦难与贫困线上的家庭对富裕生活的企盼与追求。

　　1946年秋天，国民党军队大举进攻陕甘宁边区，住文水一带的八路军调往晋西作战，阎锡山趁机扫荡晋中平川，形势恶化。为了保存革命力量，减少不必要的牺牲，中共文水县委根据上级指示，决定留少数干部组织“武工队”，坚持敌后斗争，大批干部转移上山，刘胡兰也接到上山的通知。但经过锻炼逐渐成熟起来的刘胡兰，想到自己年龄小易于隐蔽，敌后工作更需要她，请求留下来坚持斗争，上级批准了她的请求。在艰苦的环境里，她深入敌区；收集情报，发动群众，开展斗争。经常出入“青纱帐”，隐匿“古墓穴”；配合“武工队”打击敌人，协助“武工队”镇压了云周西村罪大恶极的反动村长石佩怀。
