　　Oneofthemoststrikingchangesinfamilystructureoverthelasttwentyyearshasbeentheincreaseofsingleparentfamilies.Inthisfamilythereisonlyoneparentinthehouseholdraisingthechildren.Duetohighdivorceratesandadultschoosingnottomarry,thisiscurrentlythefastestgrowingfamilyforminNorthAmerica.Morethanhalfofallchildrenwillspendsomeoftheirlivesinasingle-parentfamily.Currently,88percentofthesefamiliesareheadedbywomen.

　　In1970,thenumberofsingleparentfamilieswithchildrenundertheageof18was3.8million;by1990thenumberhadmorethandoubledto9.7million.Forthefirsttimeinhistory,childrenaremostlikelytoliveinasingleparentfamilyforreasonsotherthanthedeathofaparent.Oneinfourchildrenarebornwiththeirmothersnotmarried,usuallyteenagemothers.Oneofthemostexpensivethingsforasingleparentischildcare.
