　　TheKoreanWar(1950–armistice,1953)wasamilitaryconflictbetweentheRepublicofKorea,supportedbytheUnitedNations,andtheDemocraticPeople'sRepublicofKoreawhichwassupportedbyPeople'sRepublicofChina(PRC),andwithairsupportfromtheSovietUnion.Thewarbeganon25June1950andanarmisticewassignedon27July1953.ThewarwasaresultofthepoliticaldivisionofKoreabyagreementofthevictoriousAlliesattheconclusionofthePacificWar.TheKoreanpeninsulahadbeenruledbyJapanfrom1910untiltheendofWorldWarII.In1945,followingthesurrenderofJapan,Americanadministratorsdividedthepeninsulaalongthe38thParallel,withUnitedStatestroopsoccupyingthesouthernpartandSoviettroopsoccupyingthenorthernpart.[28]

　　ThefailuretoholdfreeelectionsthroughouttheKoreanPeninsulain1948deepenedthedivisionbetweenthetwosides,andtheNorthestablishedaCommunistgovernment.The38thParallelincreasinglybecameapoliticalborderbetweenthetwoKoreas.Althoughreunificationnegotiationscontinuedinthemonthsprecedingthewar,tensionintensified.Cross-borderskirmishesandraidsatthe38thParallelpersisted.ThesituationescalatedintoopenwarfarewhenNorthKoreanforcesinvadedSouthKoreaon25June1950.[29]ItwasthefirstsignificantarmedconflictoftheColdWar.[30]

　　TheUnitedNations,particularlytheUnitedStates,cametotheaidoftheSouthKoreansinrepellingtheinvasion.AfterearlydefeatsbytheNorthKoreanmilitary,whenarapidUNcounter-offensiverepelledtheNorthKoreanspastthe38thParallelandalmosttotheYaluRiver,thePeople'sRepublicofChina(PRC)cametotheaidofCommunistNorth.[29]AChinesecounter-offensiverepelledtheUnitedNationsforcespastthe38thParallel.TheSovietUnionmateriallyaidedNorthKoreaandChina.ThethreatofanuclearwareventuallyceasedwithanarmisticethatrestoredtheborderbetweentheKoreasnearthe38thParallelandcreatedtheKoreanDemilitarizedZone(DMZ),a2.5-mile(4.0km)widebufferzonebetweenthetwoKoreas.

　　Duringthewar,bothNorthandSouthKoreaweresponsoredbyexternalpowers,thusfacilitatingthewar'smetamorphosisfromacivilwartoaproxywarbetweenpowersinvolvedinthelargerColdWar.Fromamilitaryscienceperspective,theKoreanWarcombinedstrategiesandtacticsofWorldWarIandWorldWarII—swiftinfantryattacksfollowedbyairbombingraids.Theinitialmobilecampaigntransitionedtotrenchwarfare,lastingfromJuly1951untilthe1953borderstalemateandarmisticethoughminoroutbreaksoffightingcontinuetothepresentday.
