　　Thecliffs(悬崖)abovethetownarehometoalargegroupofpuffins.Thebirdsdigholesallaroundthecliffs.Theseholesaretheirhomes.Theiryoungstayintheholesforaboutsevenweeks.Thentheybegantoleave.SomemoveslowlyontheirundevelopedwingsandfeetdowntotheseaaroundHeimaey.Theretheyswim.whichtheycandonaturally,andlearntodive(潜水)forfish.others,howeverraylosetheirwayatnightandfindthemselvesinthetowninstead.Ontheground,theyoungbirdsareintrouble.Becausetheirwingsarenotfullydeveloped,theycannottakeoffquicklytoseaandsafety.Thebirdsthenbecomeagoodmealforcatsandotheranimals.

　　每年八月,(位于冰岛南海岸边)赫马岛上的年轻人整夜漫步于大街小巷.为什么他们的父母允许他们整夜不归呢?因为赫马岛上的孩子们要去拯救小海鹦,一种体型小巧的黑白混色的海鸟.

　　小镇上方有一面悬崖就栖息着一大群海鹦.这些鸟儿在崖壁上凿满了洞,而这些洞就是它们的家.它们的幼鸟在洞里大约待7周左右,便离开它们的洞穴；用它们那稚嫩的翅膀慢慢地飞行,有些飞到赫马岛周围的海里,它们天生就会游泳,在这学习潜水和捕鱼.而其他的小鸟呢,在夜里被光线引到了小镇里面.到了地上,小鸟们可就麻烦了,因为它们的翅膀还未发育充分.它们不可能快速地起飞并安全地飞到海里,便成了猫和其它动物们的一顿美餐.

　　多年来,岛民一直在帮助这些幼鸟.一到8月下旬的晚上,孩子们便纷纷拿着纸做的盒子,打着灯匆匆出门去捉小海鹦,几乎整夜都在追踪小鸟.他们把海鹦幼鸟放进盒子里,把它们照顾得好好的.

　　次日清晨,孩子们就把小海鹦带到海边去放了它们.这些幼鸟会在这片海域生活至少两年,然后便再次返回到悬崖上去建造属于它们自己的小家.
