School,ChildhoodandPoetry

　　Onetime,investigatinginthebackyardofourhouseinTemucothetinyobjectsandminusculebeingsofmyworld,Icameuponaholeinoneoftheboardsofthefence.Ilookedthroughtheholeandsawalandscapelikethatbehindourhouse,uncaredfor,andwild.Imovedbackafewsteps,becauseIsensedvaguelythatsomethingwasabouttohappen.Allofasuddenahandappeared,atinyhandofaboyaboutmyownage.BythetimeIcamecloseagain,thehandwasgone,andinitsplacetherewasamarvelouswhitesheep.

　　Thesheep'swoolwasfaded.Itswheelshadescaped.Allofthisonlymadeitmoreauthentic.Ihadneverseensuchawonderfulsheep.Ilookedbackthroughtheholebuttheboyhaddisappeared.Iwentintothehouseandbroughtoutatreasureofmyown:apinecone,opened,fullofodorandresin,whichIadored.Isetitdowninthesamespotandwentoffwiththesheep.

　　Ineversaweitherthehandortheboyagain.AndIhaveneveragainseenasheeplikethateither.ThetoyIlostfinallyinafire.

　　Ihavebeenaluckyman.Tofeeltheintimacyofbrothersisamarvelousthinginlife.Tofeeltheloveofpeoplewhomweloveisafirethatfeedsourlife.Buttofeeltheaffectionthatcomesfromthosewhomwedonotknow,fromthoseunknowntous,whoarewatchingoveroursleepandsolitude,overourdangersandourweaknesses,thatissomethingstillgreaterandmorebeautifulbecauseitwidensouttheboundariesofourbeing,andunitesalllivingthings.

　　Thatexchangebroughthometomeforthefirsttimeapreciousidea:thatallofhumanityissomehowtogether.Thatexperiencecametomeagainmuchlater;thistimeitstoodoutstrikinglyagainstabackgroundoftroubleandpersecution.

　　Itwon'tsurpriseyouthenthatIattemptedtogivesomethingresiny,earthlike,andfragrantinexchangeforhumanbrotherhood.JustasIonceleftthepineconebythefence,Ihavesinceleftmywordsonthedoorofsomanypeoplewhowereunknowntome,peopleinprison,orhunted,oralone.

　　ThatisthegreatlessonIlearnedinmychildhood,inthebackyardofalonelyhouse.Maybeitwasnothingbutagametwoboysplayedwhodidn'tknoweachotherandwantedtopasstotheothersomegoodthingsoflife.Yetmaybethissmallandmysteriousexchangeofgiftsremainedinsidemealso,deepandindestructible,givingmypoetrylight.

　　学校,童年和诗歌
