　　TheRenaissancewasaculturalmovementthatprofoundlyaffectedEuropeanintellectuallifeintheearlymodernperiod.BeginninginItaly,andspreadingtotherestofEuropebythe16thcentury,itsinfluenceaffectedliterature,philosophy,art,politics,science,religion,andotheraspectsofintellectualenquiry.Renaissancescholarsemployedthehumanistmethodinstudy,andsearchedforrealismandhumanemotioninart.

　　Renaissancethinkerssoughtoutlearningfromancienttexts,typicallywritteninLatinorancientGreek.ScholarsscouredEurope'smonasticlibraries,searchingforworksofclassicalantiquitywhichhadfallenintoobscurity.Insuchtextstheyfoundadesiretoimproveandperfecttheirworldlyknowledge;anentirelydifferentsentimenttothetranscendentalspiritualitystressedbymedievalChristianity.TheydidnotrejectChristianity;quitethecontrary,manyoftheRenaissance'sgreatestworksweredevotedtoit,andtheChurchpatronizedmanyworksofRenaissanceart.However,asubtleshifttookplaceinthewaythatintellectualsapproachedreligionthatwasreflectedinmanyotherareasofculturallife.

　　ArtistssuchasMasacciostrovetoportraythehumanformrealistically,developingtechniquestorenderperspectiveandlightmorenaturally.Politicalphilosophers,mostfamouslyNiccolòMachiavelli,soughttodescribepoliticallifeasitreallywas,andtoimprovegovernmentonthebasisofreason.InadditiontostudyingclassicalLatinandGreek,authorsalsobeganincreasinglytousevernacularlanguages;combinedwiththeinventionofprinting,thiswouldallowmanymorepeopleaccesstobooks,especiallytheBible.
