Intheyearof1993,aconflictthatwhetherdissectionshouldberequiredinhighschoolclassesoccurredintheUniversityofColorado,anditisstillaproblemyettobedecided.Althoughitseemsthatmorepeopledisgustdissectionsinhighschool,Ihavemyownpointofviewonthisconflict.
Ithinkaccessestobothdissectionandalternativesinhighschoolshouldbeoffered.Thenwhethertododissectionsoralternativeswoulddependonthestudents’wills.Peoplehavedifferentopinions—minors’ideasshouldnotberepresentedbythoseofthemajors.
Themainreasonsupportingthatdissectionshouldbekeptinhighschoolclassesisthatstudentsarecurious.Theywanttotouchthingsormakethingbytheirownhands;inanotherword,abiologyclassorananatomyclasswithoutanydissectionissortofboring.Besides,studentsmightlistencarefullyandquietlytotheteacher,becausetheydon’twanttomakeanexcitingexperimentacompletemess.
Moreover,dissectionwillactpositivelytotheresultsoftheexams.Becausebeingabletodissectananimalisabrandnewexperimentformoststudentsandthatwillinflamestudents’desiresforknowledgefromoutofthebook.Theothercauseisthatthepicturesorthedescriptionsarealmostuselessforrecognizingtheorgansortissuesinthecreature’sbody,evenifstudentscanreciteeverythinginthebooks.Inthiscase,dissectiondoeshelpstudentswiththeirgrades.
