MeanwhileinAmericaThomasHopkinsGalaudetwasstudyingtobeaminister.Hewasveryconcernedaboutthelackofeducationalopportunitiesforthedeaf.Thereforein1815GallaudetsailedtoLondonEnglandtoseekideasonhowtoteachdeafpeople.WhilehewastherehemetaFrencheducatorofthedeafwhoinvitedhimtogotoParistospendthreemonthslearningattheRoyalInstitutionfortheDeaftheschoolwhereLaurenClercwasteaching.Gallaudetacceptedtheoffer.Thetwomenworkedandstudiedwelltogether.WhenthetimecameforGallaudettoreturnheaskedClerctocomewithhim.Clercacceptedononecondition:thathewouldstayinAmericaonlyashorttime.
ThetwomensetsailonJune1816.ThevoyageacrosstheAtlanticOceantook52days;howeverClereandGallaudetputthetimetogooduse.ClercstudiedEnglishandGallaudetstudiedsignlanguage.Theydiscussedtheschoolforthedeafwhichtheyplannedtoopen.Onthelongtriptheyhadmanyconversationsabouteducationanddeafness.TheyearaftertheyarrivedtheyfoundedaschoolforthedeafinHarfordConnecticut.
