　　第二个夜晚以及很多个夜晚过后，一种无言的仪式发生了。天色渐晚，我又在小丘中心扮演起了我的角色，开始了今晚的故事。有些晚上，为了更充分地品尝胜利的滋味，我欺骗了他们。在讲到杰克·伦敦或布雷特·哈特所写故事的最令人兴奋的部分时，我会停下来，并不无警告地告诉他们这本书我就读到这里，只能明晚继续了。当然，那不是真的。但我必须确定我新发现的权利和地位。直到秋天开学，我享受了漫长夏天的每个夜晚。更多更时髦的听众也听了我其他的故事。但是对于那个坐在糖果店外小丘附近的结实健壮的人，我有一种莫名的爱，总是念念不忘。
