liketheriseandfalloftheBritishEmpire,inthethreequeens(ElizabethI,
Vitoria,ElizabethII)timesrespectivelyreachesthethreesummits.Drama,the
brilliantlywonderfulworkofthehistoryofEnglishliteraturehasitsownspokesperson
intheabovethreetimes.ShakespearewouldalwaysbethesymbolofBritish
drama,theleaderof“Elizabethdrama”,andthelinkerofthethreefamous“University
Wits”.Shakespeare'stalentandcontributionstodramawasunsurpassable,later
playwrightscanonlyliveinhisshadow.EvenSheridan,whowasrecognizedthe
mostdistinguisheddramatistinthe18thcenturywasnoexception.Hewasgoodat
writingsatires,buthisbestworkwasjustacontinuationoftheShakespearean
comedy.ItseemsthatthetwocenturiesafterShakespeare,Britishdramatists’greatest
contributionwastopopularizedandpatchupShakespeare’sworks.
