MarthaBerrywasbornin1866.LuckierthanmostGeorgianmountainchildren,shereceivedaneducation.Butsheneverforgototherchildrenofthemountainswhoseparentscouldn'taffordtosendthemtoschool.In1902MarthaBerrystartedaschoolforthesechildren.Itwashousedinasinglesmalllogcabinandwasattendedbyonlyfivepupils.Now,eightyyearslaterthereareascoreofBerryschoolsinthearea,withatotalofoveronethousandstudentsandawaitinglistofaboutfivethousand.
MarthaBerryinherlateryearsreceivedmanymedalsandhonorsforwhatshehaddoneforthepoormountainchildrenofGeorgia,andin1931shewasnamedoneofthetwelvemostimportantwomenintheUnitedStates.Sheneverstoppedworkingforthemountainchildrentillherdeathin1942.
