　　YaostartedplayingfortheShanghaiSharksasateenager,andplayedontheirseniorteamforfiveyearsintheChineseBasketballAssociation(CBA),winningachampionshipinhisfinalyear.Heenteredthe2002NBADraft,andafternegotiatingwiththeCBAandtheSharkstosecurehisrelease,hewasselectedbytheHoustonRocketsasthefirstoverallpickofthedraft.HehassincebeenselectedtostartfortheWesternConferenceintheNBAAll-StarGameinallsixofhisseasons,andhasbeennamedtotheAll-NBATeamteamthreetimes.However,theRocketshavenotadvancedpastthefirstroundoftheplayoffssincehehasjoinedtheteam,andhehasmissedsignificanttimeduetoinjuryineachofthepastthreeseasons.
