　　Oftheyoungestchildren(nineto14months)girlsspentsignificantlylongerplayingwiththedollthanboysandboysspentmuchmoretimewiththecarandballthanthegirlsdid．Amongthetwo-andthree-year-oldsgirlsspent50percentofthetimeplayingwiththedollwhileonlytwoboysbrieflytouchedit．Theboysspentalmost90percentoftheirtimeplayingwithcarswhichthegirlsbarelytouched．Therewasnolinkbetweentheparents'viewonwhichtoysweremoreappropriateforboysorgirlsandthechildren'schoice．

　　DrBrendaToddsaid：“Childrenofthisagearealreadyexposedtomuchsocialization．Boysmaybegiven'toysthatgo'whilegirlsgettoystheycancareforwhichmayhelpshapetheirpreference．Butthesefindingsagreewiththeformerideathatchildrenshownaturalinterestsinparticularkindsoftoys．Therecouldbeabiologicalbasisfortheirchoices．Malesthroughevolutionhavebeenadaptedtoprefermovingobjectsprobablythroughhuntinginstincts(本能)whilegirlspreferwarmercolourssuchaspinkthecolourofanewbornbaby．”
