Researchershavebeenstudyingthisgroupofchildrenfordecadesnow.Theyobservedthelevelofself-controltheyoungstersdisplayed.Parents,teachers,eventhekidsthemselves,scoredtheyoungstersonmeasureslike“actingbeforethinking”and“Persistenceinreachinggoals.”
Thestudyled byMoffittofDukeUniversityandcolleaguesfollowed1,000childrenfrombirthtoage32inDunedinNewZealand.
“Thechildrenwhohadthelowestself-controlwhentheywereagethreetoten,lateronhadthemosthealthproblemsintheir30s,”Moffittsaid,“andtheyhadtheworstfinancialsituation.Theyweremorelikelytohaveacriminalrecordandtoberaisingachildasasingleparentonaverylowincome.”Moffittexplainedthatself-controlproblemswerewidelyobserved,andweren’tjustafeatureofasmallgroupofmisbehavingkids.
Moffittsaidit’sstillunclearwhysomechildrenhavebetterself-controlthanothers,thoughshesaidotherresearchershavefoundthatit’smostlyalearnedbehaviorwithrelativelylittlegeneticinfluence.Butgoodself-controlcanbesettoruninfamillesbecausechildrenwithgoodself-controlaremorelikelytogrowuptobehealthyandprosperousparents.Butthegoodnews,Moffittsaid,isthatself-controlcanbetaughtbyparents,andthroughschoolcurriculathathavebeenshowntobeeffective.
