TheFragrantHillsPark,about30kilometresnorthwestofBeijing,isoneofthemostfavouriteresortsinthecity'soutskirts.Itcoversanareaof160hectares.
In1186,intheJinDynasty,theFragrantHillsTemplewasbuiltandterraces,pavilionsandpagodaswereaddedbythesubsequentdynasties.TheareawaslaterconvertedintoaparkandwasnamedtheParkofTranquilityandPleasure.
AlongwithYuanmingyuanandtheSurmmerPalace,theparkwastwicedestroyedin1860andin1900.Thedestructionwassoseriousthatthereconstructioneffortsmadeinthelateryearswereneverabletorestoreitsoriginalscaleandsplendour.After1949,large-scalerestorationtookplaceandnowtheFragrantHillsParkisapop-ularplaceinlateautumnforholiday-makerswhenthemapleleavesredden.Thebrilliantfoliageisthemainattraction.Nooneissurewherethesumactreesoriginated.Legendhasitthatasouthwindcarriedtheseedsofthered-leaftreestoBeijing.Thentheseedssurvived,andasyearspassedtheygrewintoalovelyforest.AnotherstorygoesthatthesumacsweretransplantedtotheareabyEmperorQianlong(l736-l795)oftheQingDynasty.InNovember,thefrostedleavesofthesetrees,alongwiththepersimmonsandmaples,spreadovertheFragrantHillslikeathickredblanket.Fortwocenturies,ithasbeenaresortfortheresidentsinBeijing.
