　　TheLouvreMuseumisthelargestnationalmuseumofFrance.ItisacentrallandmarkofParis,locatedontheRightBankoftheSeineinthe1stneighborhood.Nearly35,000objectsfromprehistorytothe19thcenturyareexhibitedoveranareaof60,600squaremeters.

　　Themuseumopenedon10August1793withanexhibitionof537paintings,themajorityoftheworksbeingconfiscatedchurchandroyalproperty.Becauseofstructuralproblemswiththebuilding,themuseumwasclosedin1796until1801.HoldingshavegrownsteadilythroughdonationsandgiftssincetheThirdRepublic,exceptduringthetwoWorldWars.Asof2008,thecollectionisdividedamongeightdepartments:EgyptianAntiquities;NearEasternAntiquities;Greek,Etruscan,andRomanAntiquities;IslamicArt;Sculpture;DecorativeArts;Paintings;andPrintsandDrawings.
