　　theleftlowershaft.Loadisappliedtothegearsinthestatic

　　conditionbymeansofadeadweightleversystemwhichtwiststhe

　　twohalvesoftheflangecouplingrelativetoeachanother.After

　　loadingthetwohalvesoftheflangedcouplingareclampedto-

　　getherbysixscrews.Thewholegearboxismountedonlow

　　frictiontrunnionbearingswhichallowthemeasurementofthe

　　totaldrivingtorquebymeasuringthestatictorquereactionforce

　　appliedtoanelectronicloadcell.Theexternaldriveisapplied

　　throughtherightlowershaftoftherigviaacouplingonthe

　　outsideofthegearbox.Thiscouplingcanbedisconnectedtoallow

　　thegearboxtoswingfreelyonitstrunnionbearingswhencali-

　　bratingthereactionforceloadcell.Thetwogearsmountedonthe

　　topshafteachhave1mmdiameteraxialholesdrilledinoneof

　　theirteethtoallowmeasurementofgeartoothbulktemperatures.

　　Thermocouplesareembeddedwithintheseholeswhicharesitu-

　　atedapproximatelylevelwiththepitchlineand2mmbelowthe

　　drivingsurface.Theuppershaftisprovidedwithcentrallyand

　　radiallydrilledholestoallowfortheconnectionofthethermo-

　　couplesviaspecialsilver/graphitesliprings.
