Itiscertainlyagiventhatmostpeoplehavejobsorcareersthatcontributetosomelevelofstressintheirlife.Ithasbeendiscovered,recently,thatmanypeoplehaveahigherthannormalamountofstressintheirplaceofemploymentduetotechnologyrelatedissues.Withtechnologyboomingmanycompaniesarejumpingonthebandwagonandincorporatingnewandhightechprogramstoimprovethequalityandproductivityoftheirbusiness.Unfortunatelymanyofthesecompaniesareimplementingthesenewprogramswithoutgivingthenecessarytoolstheiremployeesneedtomakethenewprogramsworkeffectively.Thishascausedagreatdealofstressintheworkplaceforallpartiesincludingupperlevelmanagement,lowerlevelmanagement,employeesandtheITdepartment.
InastudyconductedbyAthabascaUniversityinAlbertaCanadaconcludedthat"only20%ofrespondentsbelievedthatIThasnotincreasedthestresslevelsofemployeesandonly27%thoughtthattheirorganizationmanagestheintroductionofchangebroughtaboutbyITverywell"(Robinson,Irving&Carr,2001,p.45).Thesenumbersarestaggeringsimplybecauseimplementingnewtechnologiesintheworkplaceareusuallyintendedtodecreasetheworkloadandstressoftheemployees,notincreaseit.Themostapparentproblemthatemployeeshavewithnewtechnologyisthattheyfeeltheirjobscouldhavebeenperformedbettertheoldway,whichwasusuallymanually.
Thefirstissuethatleadstoemployeestressusuallystemsfromtheverybeginningofthechange,thebuildingoftheprogram.NormallyITspecialistsarejustthat,specialists,andareverycompetentinperformingtheirjobduties,buteveryonehasabadidea,oranideathathasnotbeencarefullythoughtthrough,everyonceinawhile.Itisafactthattheseprogramsarenotalwaysthoughtoutproperlyandareinsufficientfromtheverybeginning.Thenwhenbadtraining,pooraccesstotechnicalsupportandtheinabilitytogeterrorsfixedinatimelymannerarefactoredin,itcanbearecipefordisaster.
Theincreaseofworkplacestresshascausedmanynegativeconsequencesinorganizationstoday.Inanarticlewrittenin2003,astudybytheUK'sHealthandSafetyExecutiveestimatesthat"workrelatedstressaccountsformorethanathirdofallnewincidentsofillhealth,andthatintheUKnearlythirteenmillionworkingdayswerelosttostress,depression,andanxietyin2004-5"(Teed,2006,p.4).
Therearemanythingsthatanorganizationcandotorelievestressonits'employeesincludingadequatetrainingofemployeesonnewsystems,programstomonitorandpreventITissues,andemployeestressrelievingprograms.Thelargestcontributortostresswhennewprogramsareimplementedislackoftrainingforemployees.Trainingwouldseemlikeanobviousstepintheprocess,yetitissometimesoverlooked.
Inadequatetrainingisnotusuallydoneintentionallybyuppermanagement,yetitissomethingthathappensentirelytoooften.Employeesfeelcomfortablewhentheyfeeltheyknowtheirjobdutieswell.Whenanewwayofdoingthejobisintroduced,employeeswillimmediatelygoonthedefensivebecausetheynowfeellostinaworldtheyusedtoknowsowell.Theresistancetochangeisonlymagnifiedwhentheemployeesaredealingwithanewsystemthatisnotwellsuitedfortheirjoboronethathasnotbeencarefullythoughtoutandtested.
